Do you have any nicknames?

No – Just Phil.

At what age did you start playing table tennis, and what first attracted you to the sport?

13 years old – My uncle had his own table at his home.

How long have you been a member at Draycott, and what brought you to the club?

Joined as a player and coach when the Club moved to Draycott in 1999.

Who or what has been the biggest influence on your table tennis career?

Working with many great coaches incl. Don Parker, Peter Simpson, Peter Hirst, Derrick Marples and my British League team coach Denis Worrell.

Who is your favourite table tennis player?

My idol Stellan Bengtson (1971 World Champion) who I met at a coaching seminar a few years ago plus Des Douglas who I played many times – simply the best English player we will ever have (both these players were left-handed).

What do you enjoy most about the sport?

As a player it was the competition (and winning of course). As a coach it is the greatest feeling ever to take a talented beginner and guide them to success at National Level.

If you could change one thing about the sport, what would it be?

Change the scoring system to 15 up – 3 serves each 21 up was probably too long but 11 up is too short.

Do you have any table tennis superstitions or rituals when/before you play?

I bounce the ball on the table before I serve.

What are your ambitions for the future in table tennis?

Train to be a Tutor/Assessor for the ETTA so I can tutor coaches for UKCC Coaching Awards. Find and Coach the next Draycott Table Tennis star to achieve National success.

What do you get up to outside of table tennis?

Hardware Shop Proprietor. Enjoy relaxing watching Footbal, Darts, Tennis etc on TV and playing my guitar.
